There’s no doubt that Google is the dominant search platform, handling trillions of searches annually and commanding search engine market share of 89% in North America.  The platform sees billions of searches and 79% of people using Google every day.  In the US alone, there are 246 million regular Google users.  Google should be a core component of any business’s digital marketing strategy.

With Google established as the clear leader in search marketing, is there anything further to consider?  Yes!

Local businesses should consider adding social media search to their Google-focused media plan to expand reach and engage with audiences on a more personal and interactive level.  Social media platforms offer unique opportunities to complement your Google campaigns with opportunities for discovery, community building, sales, and real-time feedback that supplement more traditional search engine optimization (SEO) and paid search advertising (SEM) strategies.

Social media search is becoming increasingly important as social platforms evolve into discovery hubs, offering a viable alternative to traditional search engines.  Consumers are using social media to find products, services, and information, making it a crucial space for businesses to reach their target audience. This shift requires businesses to optimize their content for social media search, understanding that the platforms are not just about networking but also about information discovery and product research.

Social media is increasingly used as a search engine, particularly among younger generations, with platforms like TikTok and Instagram gaining traction as go-to resources for information discovery.  A significant portion of users, especially Gen Z, are now using social media for search more often than traditional search engines like Google.  According to eMarketer, 46% of Gen Z and 35% of Millennials prefer social media for searches over traditional search engines.  Further, 44% of Gen Z discover new brands and products through social media platforms.

Here are some of the important factors driving the growth and importance of social media search:

Consumer Behavior Shift: A significant portion of consumers, particularly younger demographics like Gen Z and Millennials, are turning to social media for product discovery and information gathering.  Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Pinterest are becoming popular alternatives to traditional search engines like Google.

Direct Product Discovery: Social media platforms have built-in features that allow users to discover products directly, such as TikTok’s shop or Instagram’s explore page.  This allows for a seamless transition from product discovery to purchase.

Community & Authenticity: Social media platforms offer a sense of community and authenticity that traditional search engines may lack. Users often rely on reviews, recommendations, and discussions on social media to inform their decision making.

Social Search Engine Optimizations (SSEO): Businesses are adapting by optimizing their content for social media search, utilizing keywords, hashtags, and engaging content to improve visibility within social media algorithms.

Enhanced Market Research: Social media platforms offer valuable insights into consumer behavior, preferences, and market trends, allowing businesses to refine their strategies and better understand their target audience.

So how do you get started?

To get started with social media search, focus on optimizing your profiles, engaging with your audience, and using relevant keywords and hashtags.  Begin by choosing the right platforms for your target audience, creating engaging content, and consistently interacting with your community.

It is important to note that, unlike traditional search engines, you cannot directly bid on keywords within the search results of most social media platforms.  Pinterest is an exception.

Here are some best practices to optimize social media search:

  • Optimize Your Profiles: Include relevant keywords in your bios, post descriptions, and even hashtags. Also be sure to completely fill out profile sections with clear and concise information.  Always use high-quality images that are relevant to your brand, include clickable links to your website and other relevant content; and consider getting your account verified to build trust and credibility.
  • Optimize Your Content: Fully engage with your audience by responding to comments and participating in discussions. Create interactive content including polls, quizzes, and other content that your community will want to share.  As well, use relevant hashtags to increase the reach and visibility of your content.  In additon, if you’re a local business, use location tags to help users find your content when searching for local businesses.
  • Track and Analyze: Use platform analytics to understand what content is performing well and what needs improvement. Also, engage in social listening by monitoring conversations to understand sentiment and what people are saying about your brand and industry.
  • More: Include social media badges on your website to drive traffic to your profiles and consider leveraging social media shopping functionality to make it easier for users to purchase and engage with your products. Lastly, collaborate with relevant influencers to expand your reach.

The shift in social media search involves a move from traditional search engines like Google to social media platforms for information discovery and product research.  This shift is driven by the visual and engaging nature of social media content, personalized recommendations, and the perceived authenticity of peer-to-peer recommendations.

Social media search is a powerful tool for both consumers and businesses.  It’s important for businesses to understand this shift and adapt their strategies to engage with consumers where they are actively searching and discovering information.  As well, integrated shopping features make it easier to discover, research, and purchase products within the same environment.
